Loss of collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are proteins responsible for skin strength and elasticity, the two key components of young-looking skin. The two substances naturally break down over time, and are further degraded by environmental and lifestyle factors such as UV rays, pollution, free radicals, smoking and drinking. The body's production of collagen also slows as we age. The results of degradation and slowed regeneration of collagen and elastin are wrinkles, lines, dryness,discoloration, and loose or sagging skin.

Photoaging. Photoaging refers to the process of prematurely aging skin caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun. Regular, repeated exposure to the sun diminishes the skin's ability to repair itself, leading to accumulated damage. Age spots appear when sun damage throws off the patterns of pigment-producing melanocytes. Other damaging effects of photoaging include uneven pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and rough and leathery skin texture.

Loss of moisture. Epidermal moisture levels depend on the fine balance between water and oil in the skin. The skin's ability to maintain moisture balance diminishes with age, leading to fine lines, dry skin and a dull complexion.
